The Borough of Franklin Park requires all commercial structures use an automatic fire alarm, and are not staffed 24/7/365, to install an exterior key safe that can only be accessed only by the Fire Officials and the Fire Department. This safe is installed in a prescribed location on the exterior of the building, is wired to the buildings security system so any tampering with it will summons the Police, and must contain keys, fobs and/or access cards to grant firefighters access to the building in an emergency. The property owner is responsible to contact the Fire Official in the event the door keys/cards/fobs are changed so the keys/cards/fobs in the Knox Box is changed too.
The reason these boxes are installed is to provide immediate building access to Fire Fighters when the building is not occupied. Without the Knox Box providing access to the building, Firefighters would need to forcably break through all the doors between the entrance and the location of the automated fire alarm sensor that alarmed.
The brand of key safe chosen by the Borough of Franklin Park is Knox, so the key safes are often refered to as a "Knox Box".
Contact the Borough of Franklin Park Fire Officials's office at 412-364-4115 x319 for the forms required to order a Knox Box for your establishment. You cannot order a code compliant key safe without the authorization form from the Fire Official's Office.
