The Franklin Park Volunteer Fire Company does not regulate open burning, nor do we issue permits for open burning. Both of these functions are managed by the Borough of Franklin Park based on the adoption of the Open Burning requirements set forth by Allegheny County.
Permits for Open Burning are issued by the Borough Of Franklin Park Building and Codes Official's Office. The property owner wishing to have a fire must either call 1-412-364-4115 x 313 and ask to arrange for a Codes Official to inspect your intended open burn location per the requirements of Borough of Franklin Park Code Chapter 97, or you may complete and submit this form on the Franklin Park Borough Website. The free inspection occurrs only once every few years, unless there is a complaint. The cost of the permit is $10.00, and a permit is required for each fire.
The general rule of thumb is the fire must be at least 25 feet away from any property line, structure, fence, hedges, or any other combustibles. The fire pit or portable fireplace cannot exceed 36" in diameter, and the flames cannot exceed 24" in height. You must also burn only firewood, no scrap building materials, brush or thrash. You must have adequate means to extinguish the fire readily available on site during the fire. We recomend a charged garden hose that can extend to any point within a 25 foot radius of the fire pit.
It is important to remember that even with a fire permit if there is excessive smoke or some other form of disruption that negatively impacts others in your neighborhood, you may be instructed to put the fire out by the Police or a Codes official.
You can access the code on the Borough website by following this link for details: http://www.ecode360.com/27925407 or you can speak to a Codes Official at 1-412-364-4115 x 319 who can review the requirements with you.
