New Tanker Arrives

The Franklin Park Volunteer Fire Company proudly announces the arrival of our new Tanker.

While reviewing the fire protection needs of the community, we established that more than one-third of our emergency calls were on the interstate or west of the interstate 79/279 corridor. Neither the interstate or the vast majority of the roughly 5 square miles of Franklin Park Borough west of the interstate has public water and fire hydrants available for fire protection. We needed to take a good look at our ability to supply water in these areas.

The Fire Company determined the 1980 Mack Tanker which had faithfully served our community for 37 years was in need of either a full rebuild and retrofit to bring it up to current NFPA standards, or replacement. After considering the out-of-service time for a rebuild and that the tanker had already received a complete overhaul about 20 years ago, the decision was made to sell the 1980 Mack and purchase a new Kenworth Tanker from Deep South Fire Trucks Inc.. (Be sure to stop back at a later date, we will be posting a story about the history of the ol' Mack in a couple weeks!)

The new tanker arrived the afternoon of Tuesday March 19, 2019 about 2 weeks sooner than expected. We are now in the process of training members to operate the truck and equipping it with the hose and tools needed to place it in service.

The tanker is constructed on a Kenworth chassis powered by a Cummins X15 Performance Series Engine. A two person cab, 3000 gallon water tank, nine tool compartments, and a 1000 GPM pump rounds out the tankers configuration . In addition the tanker carries a 3000 gallon portable tank, hard suction, 1000 feet of 5 inch Large Diameter Supply Hose, a booster reel, and 2 crosslays.

Tanker 158 will serve our community for at least the next 20 years, be sure to keep an eye out for it!

If you have ever considered serving your community as a volunteer fire fighter, or would just like to stop by and say hello, our regular training and drill nights are the 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th Thursdays of the month, be sure to stop by and see us!
